Artist’s Statement and Resume

Artist’s Statement

Several years ago in a small gold encrusted 18th Century room in the magnificent church in Guadalupe, Spain, I came face to face with the power of objects. There, a monk turned an enameled panel overlooking the nave to reveal a small, primitive, figure of the virgin to face the reverent gaze of those in the room who had made the pilgrimage to see her. The myth of the virgin’s miraculous unearthing in the 13th century had propelled this unimpressive little figure to superstar status in the world of icons. It was from that encounter that I came to realize that I wanted to utilize the power of objects to become metaphors for the ideas, concepts, and stories I explore.

I have followed my compulsion to create art my whole life, but for the past twenty years I have been blissfully scavenging for intriguing cast offs and fascinating objects to incorporate into my art. I assemble vintage play things, foam taxidermy forms, rusted metal parts, vintage doll parts, and a vast array of worn treasures and mixed medias and air dry and resin clay to create my sculptures. I find it endlessly delightful to experience the alchemy of how all these disparate parts and pieces come together.  I feel like an author and my found objects are my cast of characters and all I have to do is wait for my materials to tell me who and what they want to be and what they have to say.
